Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Film Review.
The film starts with Sweeney Todd arriving by ship back in London from his transportation prison sentence in Australia.
Its use of dark gothic colours I found instantly likeable adding a ghoulish atmosphere to what I knew was going to be a “masterpiece”.
Johnny Depp’s singing voice was just the thing to rouse you , and I understand with his singing, something he has not done before was patterned
on David Bowie’s voice, that came across very good. It must be a disappointment for younger kids not be able to see this 18 certificate movie,
although with all the blood soaked victims it is hardly surprising, and believe me it was tough going some times not to look away.
All the cast were superb with Johnny and Alan Rickman as you would expect, playing spine chilling Sweeney Todd and Judge Turpin.
Helena Bonham Carter plays Mrs. Lovett who’s kitchen - even without the grisly meat pies - looks off putting, running alive with cockroaches and rats.
Everyone plays their parts to the full, with Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G), portraying Signor Adolfo Pirelli, an evil conman who competes with Sweeney
as to who shaves the best, and with his young Gin drinking assistant Toby played by Ed Saunders, who later helps out with some pie making.
Perfect film to put you off meat pies and barbers for life. Rating : NOT TO BE MISSED
